Meanwhile, markets in Singapore are closed on Friday as the Southeast Asian city-state holds its most widely-contested elections since independence 50 years ago. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index fluctuated from modest gains and losses in early trade. China’s Shanghai Composite index bounced into the black following a brief negative start. South Korea’s Kospi index halved losses following the Bank of Korea’s decision to keep its policy interest rate unchanged early Friday, in line with expectations.
